Visuals are instructional aids which increase the interest of learners and help to explain a concept more easily. The use of visuals help to develop higher-order thinking skills, enhancing tactile hand-eye-mind connections that improve the ability to learn and recall information. Visuals enhance the presentation of information increasing what the learner is understanding of the message. This tool is especially effective for students who have stronger skills in learning through visual means but also enhances the communicative message to all.

Sample of choice board, activity schedule, and first/then chart. The choice board is where the caregiver would choose a number of activities which would be feasible that day. The caregiver would select a variety from academic, daily activity, leisure and sensory items. The child would then need to pick items off the choice board to fill his activity schedule. This allows the child involvement in building the plan for the day while still keeping in mind the needs of the caregiver. Some children might need to build the plan for the day, other children may need to build a plan for the morning and then again in the afternoon. The first/then chart allows the child to keep in check with what is happening next without being overwhelmed by all of the choices. Velcro pieces can be used to move the items from one board to the next.
